There are two strains of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV-1 and HSV-2, are both causes by the herpes simplex virus. There viruses are sexually transmitted. HSV-1 is usually oral herpes and HSV-2 is usually genital herpes. Both strains o herpes could spread orally and/or genitally.

The herpes zoster virus is a cousin of the herpes simplex virus. It's a completely different infection. The herpes zoster virus could cause chicken pox of shingles. This is also a viral infection that cause cause painful blisters throughout the body. A rash could appear, along with a burning, itching or tingling feeling. There is a zoster vaccine, which reduces the chance of catching the virus.
